Bahia School Age Program

 

Bahia School Age Program launched in November 1988

 

Bahia School Age Program is our afterschool program providing care for 65 children ages 5 to 10 years old.

Our program provides afterschool care during the school year and full-time care on school holidays.

 

Children are grouped by age:

 

Pollitos (Kindergarteners) 5 to 6 year olds: 18 children 1 Lead Teacher / 1 Teaching Assistant

Leones (1st & 2nd graders) 7- 8 year olds: 24 children 1 Lead Teacher / 1 Teaching Assistant

Tigres (2nd & 3rd graders) 8-9 year olds: 24 children 1 Lead Teacher / 1 Teaching Assistant

Delfines (4th graders) 9-10 year olds:  15 children 1 Lead Teacher / 1 Teaching Assistant

Hours of Operation: School year 1:30 to 6:30 PM Breaks/Holidays and summer: 7:30-6:00 PM

One Education Director/Site Supervisor who monitors and supervises the program, teachers, parent engagement, tutoring program and overall management of program activities and partners to support Bahia School Age Program. Also managing and coordinator staff development for BAHIA Inc.

 

In each of the above named groups child are exposed to school age-appropriate activities which are planned to promote and support the skills school age children need to be at age/grade level in reading, writing and math and as well as enrich his/her learning. While Bahia does not replicate the school experience our programs and classrooms do support children in successful homework completion, providing tutors to support children’s fluency and easy in reading/writing and math.  Bahia is also a strong supporter and advocate for the Berkeley’s city-wide 2020 Vision Initiative and effort to achieve academic equity for all children and youth in Berkeley by the year 2020. Of the 8 initiatives, Bahia subscribes to the goals that all children will be Kindergarten ready and reading proficiency, every child read proficiency by the end of the third grade level.

 

To this end onsite Bahia School Age Program provides one on one tutoring, homework assistances, gardening, arts and crafts, recreational activities (such as basketball, soccer and tennis) and field trips to enhance children's sense of community, experience and knowledge of the world that surrounds him/her. 

 

Desired Results Developmental Profile - School Age is utilized bi-annually and also parent/teacher conferences are held with families/parents to share results and continue to support children’s ongoing growth, learning and development in our programs.

 

Spanish and English are woven throughout the child's daily activities and interactions with teachers and highly encourage through modeling communications between and among children, teachers and tutors. Our goal is to create an environment where children feel and understand and see the value of being a bilingual learner and communicator. BUILD tutors through UC Berkeley's Public Service Center, support those children that need additional attention with focus on school age children reaching or exceeding age and grade level proficiency in reading and/or math as determined by their latest report card.
